About Hamilton

Hamilton has become one of the biggest musicals in Broadway history, but its journey began with an unlikely idea: telling the story of an American founding father through hip-hop.

Created by Lin-Manuel Miranda and inspired by Ron Chernow's biography of Alexander Hamilton, the musical follows an orphaned immigrant who rises to become the first United States Secretary of the Treasury.

But Hamilton takes a very different approach to traditional historical musicals, blending hip-hop with musical theatre to explore ambition and the personal struggles behind the birth of a nation.

The show first premiered at New York's Public Theater in February 2015 before transferring to Broadway's Richard Rodgers Theatre. What followed was an extraordinary success, with Hamilton receiving a record-breaking 16 Tony Award nominations in 2016 and winning 11, alongside the Pulitzer Prize for Drama.

In 2020, a filmed version of the Broadway production arrived on Disney+, allowing millions more people around the world to experience the show.

More than a decade after its original premiere, Hamilton remains a landmark musical as it tours North America.
